Background News: DriveItAway Expands Vehicle Access Through Micro-Lease Program
DriveItAway Holdings Inc. and Free2move, the mobility division of Stellantis, recently introduced a shared-fleet initiative aimed at helping independent rental fleet operators add vehicle capacity without buying additional vehicles.
The companies unveiled the program at the 2026 International Car Rental Show, May 13-15 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas.
Under the initiative, participating rental car operators would gain access to vehicles acquired by DriveItAway for its flexible lease and subscription business. When subscription customers are not using those vehicles, they would be available for daily rental operations through participating Free2move rental partners.
Operators would not be required to purchase the vehicles and would retain a share of rental revenue generated by deployed units, according to the companies.
DriveItAway said the arrangement is intended to help operators address fluctuations in vehicle demand while avoiding the costs and risks associated with owning additional fleet inventory.
The initial rollout is expected to include about 150 vehicle orders in each of several launch markets in California, Florida and Texas. Another 200 vehicle orders are targeted for Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.
Vehicles would be placed with participating rental operations to support car renter demand and provide additional fleet capacity. When a subscription customer is activated, the vehicle would transition from rental service to the subscription program.
Participating operators may be able to refer customers seeking long-term vehicle access to the company's subscription program under referral or revenue-sharing arrangements.
John F. Possumato, founder and CEO of DriveItAway, said the program is designed to help rental operators manage peak-demand periods and slower cycles by providing access to additional vehicles without fixed ownership costs.
Benjamin Maillard, senior vice president and managing director of North America for Free2move, said the initiative would complement Free2move's existing Fleet on Demand offering by giving operators access to additional vehicle capacity without requiring traditional fleet-purchase commitments.
DriveItAway expects the first deployment to spur expansion into additional metropolitan markets as participation and demand increase.
